Menfulness York Friendly Run Club: Go & Grow Together

It’s estimated that half the world’s population will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives.

Taking the first step to cure this crisis in connection and calm can often be the hardest.

The Menfulness York Friendly Running Club is making great strides to that cause.

Every week, a mix of strangers and seasoned members gather on Millennium Bridge, ready to lace up and let off steam by running together. A gentle 5km that’s as much about camaraderie as it is about fitness.

Led by Dave Lingwood, friend of Joy Runs and famed for his “running every street in York” challenge, the club meets every Wednesday at 19:30, ready to run, chat, and chuckle their way through the city (and, if they fancy, head for a coffee or even a beer afterward). This isn’t about pace – it’s about presence. The emphasis is on “having fun, having a chat, and having a laugh,” with fitness as a delightful bonus.

Menfulness itself is all about forging a non‑judgmental, supportive community where men can socialise, chat, and look after their mental and physical wellbeing — no pressure, no bravado — just genuine connection. The group also enter relay teams for major running events and host regular social events beyond running, such as social football, board‑game nights (“The Board Room”), Walk & Talk mooches.
