Stepping out since 2023, Collective Run Club runs to its own stride in Newcastle’s bustling run scene – swapping the usual performance-led club, for something calmer, more social, and genuinely connective. Co-founded by Joe and Olly, two competitive runners who also loved easy miles and conversation, Collective set out to make running feel shared rather than serious.
Every Thursday evening, the group meets in Ouseburn before heading out along one of the city’s most loved stretches: the Quayside. Runners pick their own adventure, choosing between a 5km or 10km, both run at a comfortable, conversational pace. Zero pressure, zero chasing splits – just a steady pace framed by the Toon’s iconic river views and epic bridges.
The route is deliberately simple and flat. Out-and-back along the Tyne, passing landmarks like the Millennium Bridge and the Baltic, it’s accessible, scenic, and easy to drop into – whether it’s your first run in weeks or tapping into their Thursday ritual. That reliability is part of the appeal: same day, same place, same welcoming energy.
Collective Run Club Newcastle’s vibe is social without being shouty, organised without being rigid. People show up because it feels good to be there. They’ve purposely kept things simple and consistent over the years:
Post-run, many head for coffee, drinks, or food nearby, especially around Ouseburn’s coolest independent spots. The run is the anchor, but the community extends beyond it – free-flowing chats, new friendships, race plotting, and weekend plans in one.
While the club’s heart is firmly social, Newcastle Collective Run Club also acts as a gateway into the city’s wider running scene. Many members train for and take part in events like the Great North Run, local 10Ks, half marathons and more – often finding their race buddies through the Thursday crew. It’s a blend that works: low-key weekly runs paired with shared goals when people want them. Count us in!
